Produced by
EARTH LIBERATION PRISONERS SUPPORT NETWORK

"I want to thank everyone who did whatever to help me out. Sincerely it
meant a lot to me and I appreciate it. (Harjit Singh Gill, former Animal
Rights Prisoner)

Welcome to the May 2006 edition of Spirit of Freedom. With this Editorial I
would like to talk about the importance of long-term continued prisoner
support. A number of prisoners have recently told ELP that as the initial
publicity around their arrests starts to fade so they are seeing a drop in
the number of letters they are receiving. This has resulted in some of the
prisoners feeling isolated, depressed and forgotten about. As a movement we
must never let the prisoners feel forgotten about. We must remind them
everyday that they are in our thoughts, in our hearts and we will never
abandon them. ELP urges everyone to please support the prisoners on a
regular basis. Even if you dedicate just half an hour a week to sending out
a few postcards, this will remind the prisoners they are not forgotten about
and they remain within our hearts. It really does mean the world to a
prisoner to receive a letter of support, so please, no matter where you are
in the world, support the eco-prisoners and no compromise in defence of
Mother Earth!

COURT REPORTS & LEGAL UPDATES

OREGON ARRESTS UPDATE
In the ongoing saga of the FBI investigation into a series of direct actions
which occurred in Oregon through the late 1990s and into 2001 there have
been a number of developments.
In March 2006, Nathan Block and Joyanna Zacher, who had previously
'only' been charged with involvement in an arson on a Poplar Tree Farm were
formally indicted on the two over-arching conspiracy to commit arson charges
(see Spirit of Freedom January 2006 for more details).
Also in March news emerged that a woman, Briana Waters, had been
arrested and charged with involvement in the 2001 arson against the
University of Washington Horticulture Center, which occurred simultaneously
to the Poplar Tree Farm arson. Following her arrest Briana has been placed
under electronic tagging.
Briana is the first person to be directly charged with the
Washington arson. According to the media Briana has had two charges placed
against her. One charge of arson and one charge of using a destructive
device: If found guilty on both charges she faces a minimum sentence of 35
years imprisonment. At this stage Briana has not been included in the two
over-arching conspiracy charges and her trial is set for June 2006.
The next development occurred in April 2006 when the FBI revealed
they were bringing additional indictments against four people, accusing them
of an arson against a wild horse coral in 2001. Three of the four, Darren
Thurston (in custody), Rebecca Rubin (location unknown) and Joseph Dibee
(location unknown) were already facing charges related to this
investigation. However the fourth person, Justin Solondz, had previously
not been named as a defendant in this case. At the point of going to print
the location of Justin Solondz is unknown.
With Darren, Rebecca, Joseph and Justin all four have been charged
with Conspiracy to Commit Arson (this is in addition to the two over-arching
conspiracy charges), Arson, and the use of a destructive device. Again the
mandatory minimum sentence, if found guilty on all charges, is 35 years
imprisonment.
For all the latest updates on this case and for details on
individual prisoner support campaigns please check out ELP's North American
website www.ecoprisoners.org

CHUK'SHON EARTH FIRST! TWO
The sentencing of two American Earth First! activists, Rod Coronado & Matt
Crozier, for their involvement in the sabotaging of a mountain lion hunt has
been postponed yet again. They were due to be sentenced in late April 2006.
However the sentencing date has now been put back until June 2006 and even
when this date is reached supporters of the two are saying they expect the
sentencing date to be postponed yet again.
For more information about this case and how you can support the
Chuk'shon EF! Two visit www.azef.org or email Chuk'shon EF! at
sabthebastards at hotmail.com
Also ELP notes that in addition to the EF! action Rod is also facing
serious charges relating to his alleged discemination of information, which
could help someone construct an incendiary device. A separate support
campaign has been set up to support Rod around those charges. For more
information e-mail info at supportrod.org or check out the website
www.supportrod.org
Should anyone wish to send Rod a letter of support these can be
posted to Rod Coronado, c/o PO Box 732, Tucson, Arizona 85702, USA.

ERIC McDAVID UPDATE
American eco-remand prisoner, Eric McDavid, has called off his hungerstrike
after his lawyer took legal action against the prison he is held in for
failing to provide Eric with an adequate vegan diet.
However the latest news ELP has on Eric is he is very ill. He is
suffering from malnutrition. He "passes out" very easily, he is losing
weight rapidly and he is vomiting up what little vegan food he is given.
His supporters are urging people to contact the prison Eric is held at and
ask, politely, that he be given suitable vegan nutrient drinks to help
restore him to his full health.
To help Eric with his specific support needs a new individual support
campaign has been set up for him. The campaign is called "Friends and
Family of Eric McDavid (Support Campaign)" for more info e-mail
info at supporteric.org or visit the website www.supporteric.org
In a similar vein a group calling itself "Friends and Family of
Zachary Jenson (Support Campaign)" has also been launched. For more info

POLICE INFORMANTS JAILED
On 17/03/06 the police informant/former ELF activist, Ryan Lewis, was
sentenced to 6 years imprisonment following his pleading guilty to two
counts of attempted arson and one count of arson as part of an ELF
anti-urban sprawl arson campaign. Although Lewis refused to testify against
any of his co-defendants, he has been named by ELP as a police informant
after he assisted the police by identifying Eric McDavid when shown photos
of him.
Also on 17/03/06 the two sisters Eva Holland and Lili Holland, who
are also police informants/former ELF activists, were sentenced to 2 years
imprisonment having each pleaded guilty to one count of attempted arson.
The two sisters made statements against each other, against Lewis and
against fourth defendant Jeremiah Colcleasure.
The fourth defendant Jeremiah Colcleasure, who is the original
police informant in this case, was forced to enter a guilty plea for one
count of attempted arson after the Holland sisters agreed to testify against
him. Colcleasure is due to be sentenced on the 19th of May 2006.
ELP does not support police informants and we will not be listing
any of the above named people in our prisoner lists.

DONALD CURRIE
At the end of March 2006, a number of British animal rights activists were
arrested accused of involvement in an arson against PDP Couriers who have
links to both Huntingdon Life Sciences and the Wilton Box Company, who make
lab animal transportation boxes. Most of those arrested have been released
on bail, however one of the defendants, Donald Currie has been remanded into
custody.

GUILTY PLEAS TO BLACKMAIL
In mid-April 2006, four British animal rights activists, Jon Ablewhite,
Kerry Whitburn, John Smith and Josephine Mayo admitted to conspiring to
blackmail a family involved with the breeding of guninea pigs for torture &
death at the hands of vivisectors. The charges related to an animal rights
campaign which saw the family cease their involvement with the vivisection
industry.
Following their guilty pleas Jon A, Kerry W
and John S were all re-remanded
back into custody pending their sentencing. Josephine S was re-released on
bail. The sentencing is expected in mid-May 2006.

GARFIELD GABBARD
At the end of April 2006, British vegan eco-anarchist Garfield Gabbard, was
remanded into custody for an incident relating to the animal rights Covance
campaign. However at the point of going to print we are uncertain around
the exact details of his arrest.
Garfield is a former prisoner who in the mid-90s was jailed for
taking direct action against a rapist. A few years later he served a second
sentence for setting fire to a police riot van during an anti-capitalist
demonstration.

GERMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS ARREST
According to the website rheinhessenonline.de, a 21 year old woman was
recently arrested accused of smashing windows at a P&C store in Mainz,
Germany. She is also accused of throwing paintballs and smokebombs inside
the shop after breaking the windows. A security guard who stopped the
woman, after the alleged incident occurred, claimed that there were three
other people involved with the action. However the other three escaped
capture. It is estimated that ?35,000 damage was caused by the action. ELP
understand that following her arrest the woman has been released on bail
pending her trial for "Sachbeschädigung" (criminal damage).

MANASE AND MATIUS UPDATE
In 2004 West Papuan activists Manase Furima and Matius Nasira took part in a
roadblock protest to stop illegal logging. Their reward was imprisonment.
ELP is finding it very hard to get updates on these two, due to the
political situation in Indonesia, but we believe they are still imprisoned
and still in need of support.
Just recently ELP was asked if Manase and Matius could speak
English? We have enquired about this and it is unlikely they can speak
anything other than Indonesian. However please do not let this put you off
sending them short messages of support.
To aid people to fully support Manase and Matius, here is ELP's
quick guide to the Indonesian language:
"Kami harap anda baik baik" translates as "we hope you are well"
"Kami harap anda akan merdeka cepat" translates as "we hope you will be
free soon"
"Kami teman orang Papua" translates as "we are friends of Papuan people"
"Salam manis dari..." translates as "Sweet greetings from..."
For more information on Manase Furima and Matius Nasira e-mail

Journal)
Weekend of Resistance - Against the Green Scare - June 9th to June
11th
Right now there are more than a dozen people sitting in American jails (or
on strict bail release) accused of Earth and Animal Liberation Front
actions. They are facing ridiculous charges and draconian sentences.
This june show the world that the voice of truth will not be
silenced by fear.
For the past three years June 11 has been celebrated as an
international day of solidarity with Jeff "Free" Luers. He has repeatedly
been overjoyed by the amount of support he has received from around the
world.
This year Free asks you to extend the solidarity that you have
shown him to these defendants and that foremost in your mind by the thought
that the state is trying to break this struggle with repressive and
intimidating arrests and sentences. Its not just those in prison being
punished, with there sentences designed to frighten other into compliance.
Free has called for a weekend of resistance against the "Green
Scare" and is asking you to demonstrate that you can't be intimidated.
Celebrate your dissent; give it voice. Be loud. Be visible. If you have
the ability organise a reclaim the streets party or critical mass. And if
you are going to host a fundraiser or venue event, please donate all the
proceeds to the legal defence of those recently arrested who maintain
integrity in the face of repression.

DEDICATION
This edition of Spirit of Freedom is dedicated to Russian anti-fascist
activist Aleksandr "Shtopor" Ryukh, who was murdered by neo-nazis on the
16th of April 2006.
On the night of his murder Aleksandr was walking with a friend
towards a club where a German punk band "Tackleberry" were due to play when
they were ambushed by a group of six to eight neo-nazis.
Aleksandr was stabbed in the heart and died before paramedics could
arrive. His friend was also wounded but is making a good recovery.
ELP's thoughts and sympathies are with the family & friends of
Aleksandr and the other victims of fascist violence in Russia.
Aleksandr was the only son of a single mother. His mother is
finding it hard to raise the money to pay for her sons funeral. A European
based ABC group has put out a call for donations to help a grieving mother
bury her son. If anyone can help, please contact ELP and we will pass on
your details.
