*Basher Hameed was instrumental in putting the 
Black Panther Party on the map in New Jersey. A 
son of Linden, NJ, he travelled up and down the 
state seeking recruits and developing chapters 
and squads. He was deputy chair for the Jersey 
City chapter. His work and commitment put him in 
the crosshairs of the COINTELPRO attacks against 
the Black Liberation Movement as did many. It 
forced him to go underground for years. In 1981, 
he was captured and charged, along with another 
Panther comrade, Abdul Majid, with the killing of 
a Queens police officer. Hence they became known 
as ‘The Queens 2.’ It took three trials to secure 
a conviction of these warriors who each given 25 
years to life
Basher passed on August 30th from 
pancreatic cancer while wrongly being 
incarcerated for well over 20 years. Abdul Majid is still in a NY state prison
